Orishas Reimagined
Before starting my Afro-Cuban journey, I went to Cuba for a few days to learn more about the Afro-Cuban culture. On a friend’s suggestion, the place to be is in Callejón de Hamel in Havana on Sundays which comes alive with Afro-Cuban culture, in the form of music and dance. I was in awe of the performances , the dancing, the drumming (all women by the way!) and the singing. But at the time, I was not familiar with the different Orishas, rhythms and the meaning of the dances.
Now, I am able to re-imagine and re-interpret these dancers and the Orishas they portraited.
Oshun, Oya, Yemaya and Elegua.
